A burly legspinner and big-hitting lower Middle-order batsman with a sound temperament, Shaun von Berg bided his time at Northerns and played 96 first-class matches before he earned a call-up to the national squad. At the domestic level, von Berg had to compete with the likes of left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi for a place in the Titans XI and found himself between the provincial and franchise structures, but when he was given an opportunity, he usually took it.
Von Berg was crucial to the Titans’ first-class competition victories in 2016-17, where he was the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament despite playing in only half the matches. Von Berg took 32 wickets at 18.93 in that tournament. He featured in South Africa’s spin-bowling camps to India in April-May 2018 and for the A side. After finishing as the third-highest wicket-taker in the first-class competition in 2017-18, von Berg was included in South Africa’s Test squad to tour Sri Lanka in July 2018. In recent seasons Shaun has forced his way back into the national selectors thoughts and made a test appearance in February 2024 against New Zealand in Hamilton where he made 38 in the 1st innings and bowled tidily in both innings. Shaun has terrific stats in the UK where he played for several seasons at Rishton C.C. In 2016 he took 75 wickets and scored 955 runs. On hearing of Shaun’s availability Lancashire League Powerhouses Ramsbottom C.C. won the race for his signature of 2025.
